 ADST

The Alexandria University Desalination Studies and Technology Center  -  ADST - was first established in 1998 at the Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt to promote the improvement of water supplies through desalinating reuse and other water sciences, and to encourage the exchange of the state of the art of treatment technologies. It is now directly affiliated to Alexandria University. ADST is the national focal node linking the desalination activities in Egypt.

 Principal Office

Alexandria University is located in Alexandria, Egypt. It is the only comprehensive university in the northern part of Egypt. Alexandria University is committed to its role through teaching, research and community service. Its mission of teaching, scholarly activity and professional services is considered essential to the advancement of knowledge and regional development. Alexandria University is strategically located in an area with abundant natural and human resources. The university is located conveniently within a large and still growing industrial and touristic base, extending along the north coast, where the development of resort villages is expanding for more than 300 kilometers to the west of Alexandria, with scarce water resources. This provides a base for industries with a significant potential for water desalination.

 Goals And Objectives

The major goals and objectives of ADST are:

  • Conducting and coordinating Egyptian desalination activities, nationally, regionally and internationally.
  • Encouraging research, development and appropriate utilization of desalination, desalination technology and water reuse.
  • Promoting training activities in desalination.
  • Encouraging and promoting environmentally responsible and efficient use of technology.
  • Serving as a public forum to provide information on desalination related subjects, water reuse and other solute solvent separations.
  • Offering technical diplomas in desalination technologies, desalination plant operations and maintenance.
  • Establishing contacts between researchers, clients, consultants, contractors and equipment suppliers.
  • Promoting awareness of the true value of water and its augmentation by desalination.

 VISION AND MISSION

  • Vision
    - Increase the awareness of the potential of desalination technologies as alternative water resources and their localization

  • Mission
    - Promote the improvement of alternative water resources through water desalination
    - Exchange of the state of the art of desalination technologies
    - Establish national focal node linking desalination activities in Egypt

 Strategies

As a national focal desalination center, ADST is committed to achieve its objectives within the frame of the following working strategies:

  • To coordinate regular, regional and international meetings and workshops.
  • To arrange management seminars, workshops and courses.
  • To develop and to conduct courses and/or curricula.
  • To develop capacity building and training building programs for the National Academic Institutions and Industrial Community.
  • To encourage and to promote the efficient use of energy for water and other separation processes.
  • To conduct specific studies and projects to generate specific information needs for regional development in the area of water desalination and reuse.
  • To serve as consulting asset for the huge desalination projects along the Northwestern Coast of Egypt and in the Sinai Peninsula.
  • To provide studies, information and statistics related to water desalination in the region and to publish them. through the different information and publicity channels.
  • To implement and monitor other strategies as may, from time to time, be approved by the Board of Directors.
